About this project

The 2024 Delivered microsite offers an engaging exploration of the year’s standout food and grocery trends, from the most popular Big Game snacks to viral eats like cottage cheese and electrolytes. By diving deep into 2024 trends backed by Instacart purchase data, our goal is to illuminate how consumer preferences are constantly evolving, changing, and reshaping food culture.

Methodology

2024 Top Trending Items:

  • Instacart looked at the share of grocery orders for each of over 4,000 categories between January-October 2023 and January-October 2024.
  • The absolute differences and percent differences in order share were calculated between 2023 and 2024.
  • The top categories were determined by ranking both the absolute and percent differences in order share separately and weighting them equally to determine an overall rank.

2024’s Top Trends - City Level:

  • Specific categories that saw spikes on a national level were chosen to see on a city level. The percentage difference from the overall national average in order share for each of these categories was calculated for each city.
  • Instacart looked at the share of grocery orders for each of over 4,000 categories between January-October 2023 and January-October 2024 for each city in the US.
  • The absolute differences and percent differences in order share were calculated between 2023 and 2024 in each city.
  • The top categories were determined by ranking both the absolute and percent differences in order share separately and weighting them equally to determine an overall rank in each city.
  • Data from select retailers removed from certain cities as legally required.

2024 Moments - City Level:

  • Instacart looked at the share of grocery orders for each of over 4,000 categories for specific date ranges based on each moment for each city in the US.

    • New Year’s: 12/30/23 - 1/1/24
    • The Big Game: 2/9/24 - 2/11/24
    • Valentine’s: 2/14/24
    • Fourth of July: 7/2/24 - 7/4/24
    • Late Night: All orders between 9pm-1am from January 2024 - October 2024

  • The absolute differences and percent differences in order share were calculated for the specific time in question vs the overall average from January 2024 - October 2024 for each city.

  • The top categories were determined by ranking both the absolute and percent differences in order share separately and weighting them equally to determine an overall rank in each city.

  • One key category was chosen based on how much it spiked on a national level to represent each specific moment in the map. The percentage difference from the overall national average in order share for each of these categories was calculated for each city.

  • Data from select retailers removed from certain cities as legally required.
